James "Jim" A. Pendergrass, Sr., 91, died peacefully at home in Montgomery Village, MD, in the loving care of his family on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Jim was born in Springfield, Illinois on August 17, 1923. In March 1943 Jim was inducted into the US Army and served his country in the South Pacific during WWII. After his separation from the Army in 1946, Jim made his home in Washington, DC where he worked for the Smithsonian Institution for over 25-years and after as a contractor w/the US State Department for 16-years. James "Jim" A. Pendergrass, Sr., 91, died peacefully at home in Montgomery Village, MD, in the loving care of his family on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Jim was born in Springfield, Illinois on August 17, 1923. In March 1943 Jim was inducted into the US Army and served his country in the South Pacific during WWII. After his separation from the Army in 1946, Jim made his home in Washington, DC where he worked for the Smithsonian Institution for over 25-years and after as a contractor w/the US State Department for 16-years. Jim was a proud graduate of Howard University and was an enthusiastic member and supporter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Survivors include his son, James, Jr.; granddaughter, Erin Nicole; stepdaughters, Janice (Robinson) and Sandra (Garrett); nieces, Albertha, Susan, Ruth Alice, Lucille and Fredrica; nephews, Roland, Rudy, Isaac, Sylvester and James; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Jim's marriage to Odette (Johnson) of New Orleans ended in divorce. Odette preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was his son, Ulysses Grant; his sisters, Eunice, Margaret and Ruth; and his brother, Houston Grant. His marriage to Nan (Taylor) ended in divorce. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend a visitation on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington DC. A funeral mass will be held at Transfiguration Episcopal Church, 13925 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20904 on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. Internment is planned for Arlington National Cemetery and details will be announced at a later date.
