Of Washington, DC died suddenly on March 29, 2015 of a pulmonary embolism. He was born February 5,1947 to Gladys (Petrokofsy) and Kenneth Gold. He grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He co-wrote a musical revue his senior year, an early indicator of his lifelong love of Broadway theater. He majored in Political Science at New York University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1967. He did graduate studies in government at the University of Maryland. Of Washington, DC died suddenly on March 29, 2015 of a pulmonary embolism. He was born February 5,1947 to Gladys (Petrokofsy) and Kenneth Gold. He grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School. He co-wrote a musical revue his senior year, an early indicator of his lifelong love of Broadway theater. He majored in Political Science at New York University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1967. He did graduate studies in government at the University of Maryland. His first job was with the New York City Urban Corps. Early in his long career in Washington, DC, he worked for the National City Management Association and the City University of New York. During the Carter Administration, he was Assistant to the Director of Higher Education in the U.S. Department of Education. He was Director of Higher Education for the American Federation of Teachers from 1992 until he retired in 2012. He was a strong advocate for teachers, professors and labor unions. Among his many projects, he was most proud of his work to expand Pell Grants. He loved traveling, mystery novels and American presidential history. He volunteered at Whitman-Walker Health and the ACLU. He was devoted to his daughters and besotted with his granddaughter.
He is survived by longtime partner, William Carroll; two daughters, Emily Boutilier of Amherst, MA and Rebekka Gold of New York City, NY; granddaughter, Samantha Boutilier; sister, Victoria Gold of Boston, MA; son-in-law, Robert Boutilier; aunt, Rose Petrokosfy of Moorestown, NJ; his late father's companion, Ruth Lipset; and several cousins.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at Joseph E. Hagan Chapel at JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS, INC., 5130 Wisconsin Ave., N.W. (corner of Harrison St.), Washington, DC 20016. The family will receive visitors at home after the service from noon until 6 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to Whitman-Walker Health, Washington, DC.
