William Andrew Christenberry, Jr., whose intimate photographs of crumbling rural buildings and almost violently verdant landscape of his native Alabama made him one of the most respected and influential artists of the modern South, died Monday, November 28, 2016 in Washington, DC at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sandra Deane Christenberry; children, Emlyn, Andrew and Kate; five grandchildren; one brother, John Christenberry of Dallas, TX. Relatives and friends are invited to call at Joseph Gawler's Sons, LLC, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW (corner of Harrison Street) Washington, DC on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Following the visitation, Mr. Christenberry will be buried in Tuscaloosa, Alabama after a service there.
